LIMA, PERU
The original name for Lima was "The City of Kings" and fast became the most prosperous city of South America. The Plaza de Armas, in the center of town, reflects this glorious past.
Francisco Pizzaro, the leader of conquistadors, funded Lima on January 6 of 1533. only 40 years after Christopher Colomb discovered new continent. It is the oldest city of New Continent. Before for more than 3000 years various evolved civilizations lived on costal plains of what is now Peru. The famous temple of Pachacamac, only 30 km south from the center of Lima, dates from 500 A.C.
The elaborate bronze fountain, made in year 1650, occupies the center of the square. The cathedral of Lima, build on the site of an ancient Inca temple dedicated to Puma, houses the grave of Francisco Pizzaro. Next, is El Palacio de Arzobispal build in year 1924. The neoclassic Palacio Municipal, the center of civic administration, faces the site of Catholic administration. Next to it is a monument dedicated to Inca leader Tauli Chusco.
The Museo de Oro (Gold Museum) and the Museo de la Nación (Nacional Museum) are two places one must visit while in Lima.
El Museo de la Inquisición, located next to Plaza Bolivar, three blocks from the cathedral of Lima, is a stark witness to Catholic leadership era (1570 -1820) when the fate (blind obedience) was enforced by the most abject tortures. Visits are free of charge.
